ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
Welcome to Menchville High School, the award winning home of the mighty Monarchs!
Menchville remains the peninsula leader in academic programs, student achievement, and athletics. Menchville is also a two-time winner of the National Blue Ribbon School Award, has been designated by the US Department of Education as a New American High School (the ONLY school in Virginia with that honor) and has been named by Newsweek Magazine as one of the Top 100 High Schools in the nation based on our Advanced Placement program. We continue to win the coveted Julian Rice Award as the most outstanding overall athletic program in the Peninsula District.
We like to think of Menchville as a family where teenagers are able to learn, grow as individuals, and identify their strengths with the help of a caring and concerned group of adults. With the valuable assistance of our community partners, we continually strive to develop our students into becoming productive members of today's society.
It has been a long-standing philosophy here at MHS that a well-rounded involvement in academics, athletics, and activities is what truly produces a successful high school student. We welcome you to Monarch Country, and we urge you to get involved in your school and catch that MONARCH PRIDE!
The vision of Menchville High School is to foster an environment of respect and to encourage students to utilize the opportunities available to them while focusing on achievement and accepting personal responsibility for their education.
The mission of Menchville High School is to instill the twenty-first century skills and behaviors necessary to ensure students realize their full potential in school as well as in a global society.

New American High School
New American High Schools are innovative schools whose whole-school reform efforts enable their students to excel. The U.S. Department of Education has identified these leading-edge schools throughout America's cities, suburbs, and rural towns. Their students represent the diversity of their communities. New American High Schools have dramatically improved their quality of education, and work to ensure that all students are:
- Challenged by rigorous academics and high expectations
- Benefiting from a small, safe, personalized learning environment
- Well-prepared for college and careers
Students at these schools acquire the communication, problem solving, and technology skills needed to succeed in a global, information-based economy.
Blue Ribbon School
Since 1982, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program has celebrated many of America's most successful schools. A Blue Ribbon flag waving overhead has become a trademark of excellence, a symbol of quality recognized by everyone from parents to policy-makers in thousands of communities.
The emerging secret of the Blue Ribbon Schools Program is its power to stimulate and focus school improvement initiatives. "The Blue Ribbon nomination package pulls together what is cutting edge in education today," says one educator. "The school that goes through the process is examining itself in terms of what works in the best schools in the country."
"Regardless of the direction you're going with in school improvement, the Blue Ribbon program gives you a vehicle to get on track. It gives you a framework and standards so your know where you stand," says one principal. Schools are finding that the richness and scope of the Blue Ribbon nomination process allows them to reflect, "not just on the surface level, but down deep." One educator says, "If you want a tool for school improvement, there's nothing out there better than the Blue Ribbon Schools Program. It's the best you can find."
